Dieter Richter was born December 24, 1938 in Hof. After studying German Studies, classical philology and theology in Munich and Göttingen, he joined the faculty of the University of Bremen and taught critical literary history until he retired in 2004. His research since the nineties focused on the Grand Tour, the history of German-Italian relations and the geography of southern Italy.
Aside from his work as a writer and translator, Dieter Richter also works as a curator, including for the exhibition "The Last Hours of Herculaneum" at the Bremen Focke-Museum.
