Hermann Schulz was born on 21 July 1938 in Nkalinzi, East Africa. He spent his childhood and youth in the so-called Wendland (the easternmost corner of Lower Saxony) and in the Lower Rhine area.
After school and an apprenticeship in the book trade he spent several months in the Near East (Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon). He has lived in Wuppertal since 1960. In 1967 he succeeded Johannes Rau as head of the publishing house Peter Hammer.
During the 70s and 80s he devoted himself both personally and as a publisher to South American literature and to the political development of Nicaragua. His publishing house became well known for its focus on black Africa and Latin America, and for its internationally successful books for younger readers.
